Florida Department of Education grant dispute resolved this week

Compromise can describe how a contract dispute was resolved by the Florida Department of Education this week. With the resolution, two companies will benefit from work tied to the state's Race to the Top grant program.

The dispute came to light in April when the Florida Department of Education awarded the lucrative contract for a computer-based testing system to NCS Pearson. The other competing company, CTB/McGraw-Hill, challenged the decision and asked an administrative law judge to give the department a chance to resolve the dispute.

Florida company ready to expand concept through franchising

It's amazing the amount of new ideas that are brought to market by creative people looking to make a living. Last week another idea will be expanded in the Florida market and the company is also announcing franchising opportunities for those willing to make an investment and that love the concept.

Helgerson Franchise Group is launching a national franchise opportunity for IslandTime Treasures, a new concept that provides a unique sand impression art experience for customers to build their own treasure. The company opened its first location in November 2011 in the Bradenton, Florida, area and has had a lot of success with the concept. The company's founders are now ready to expand their idea by awarding mobile units, retail kiosks or cart franchise opportunities to qualified people nationwide.

Florida court sides with union employees over contract dispute

Contract negotiations can be contentious when both sides feel passionately about their respective positions and this is the case between Hialeah and Florida's largest union.

This week a Florida court sided with the union employees saying that they were subject to unfair labor practices that took place during contract negations in 2010. Now Hialeah must decide if they will appeal this decision to the Florida Supreme Court. Hialeah feels that they did not commit unfair labor practices by enforcing a 30 percent pay cut to its union employees.

Florida teacher union not happy with mediator's ruling

Contract disputes can be complicated especially when they affect the education of our children. This is the case of a contract dispute with Brevard Public School teachers in Florida and their school board. The Brevard Federation of Teachers is not happy with the recommendations made by a mediator brought in after an impasse in negotiations. Both the union and the school district have now decided to present their cases at a hearing where the school board will act as judge.

The teachers union is not happy that the mediator sided with the school district to give raises to some of its teachers and others would receive a one-time bonus of $700 to those at the top end of the pay scale and $350 to those hired since pay freezes began in the district. The union feels that the district can afford to give all of the teachers pay raises if back-dated to Nov. 1.

Federal program could spur commercial real estate development

With commercial real estate lending still considered soft, many investors have been coming into the marketplace through a federal program that allows foreign nationals a green card in exchange for investing in job-creating ventures. This program, known as the Immigrant Investor Program, or ED-5 visa, could be the answer to many commercial real estate investors in the Orlando, Florida, area.

EB-5 is administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and it provides a permanent resident visa or green card to foreign investors that invest a minimum of $1 million in a U.S. project that creates or retains at least 10 jobs.

Charter school disputing district contract

Contract disputes involving schools typically get a lot of attention because it directly affects the parents of the children that attend the school. The parents want the best possible education for their children and that means great teachers and reasonable classroom sizes. A charter school in Tallahassee, Florida, is disputing the contract from Leon County Schools.

Both sides appeared before a mediation session with the Florida Department of Education and neither side could come to an agreement. The dispute will now go to an administrative law judge later this month.

Florida has largest entrepreneurial growth

While the economy is making a slow recovery, some of the rebound could be attributed to entrepreneurs. A recent study by the Kauffman Foundation, reports that Florida had the largest increase in entrepreneurial activity over the past decade. This is great news for those seeking employment because startup companies are important for economic growth as most new jobs are created by companies that are less than five years old.

Investor planning to auction 25 Florida properties

With the Florida commercial real estate market making a slow recovery, some investors are taking advantage of the upswing to sell their investments. Odyssey Entities LLC has decided to take advantage of the commercial real estate market and auction Lakeland's Palm Center in order to return money to investors.

The company purchased the 132,000 square foot center in 2009 for $4 million and the center has done really well during the recent tough economic times.

Firefighter contract dispute has no end in sight

A contract dispute dating back to 2006 with Daytona Beach, Florida, firefighters is back in the spotlight again as city commissioners have rejected firefighters' preferences in the contract proposal that they presented. This contract dispute looks like it will continue to be unresolved.

Daytona Beach residents don't have to worry whether they will have fire department support as the commissioners can opt to impose the contract as they see fit while the firefighters continue their contract dispute simultaneously.

Florida's commercial real estate market slowly recovering

With the economy making a slow recovery, there are signs that the commercial real estate market in Florida is also starting to rebound from the recession. With a recovery in the commercial real estate markets, we should start seeing demand for office, industrial and retail commercial space, which equates to more businesses growing and expanding.

According to Costar, a full recovery will take time, but over the past 10 years, the changes that the commercial real estate market has experienced will hopefully not happen again -- in fact, experts believe that it is unlikely that we'll see that sort of bottom out in our children's lifetimes.
