Qualcomm open to key acquisitions

Qualcomm Inc., the giant semiconductor maker, announced that for the quarter ending Dec. 25, 2011, it had a profit of $1.4 billion, compared with a lower $1.17 billion at the same time in 2010. With an international workforce numbering more than 20,000 employees, the company is one of the largest providers of microchips and other technologies for the growing smartphone market.

In a recent interview, Qualcomm President Steve Mollenkopf said that the corporation will continue to take advantage of potentially lucrative acquisitions of technology companies, although it doesn't have any particular plans in place to buy businesses.

Florida REIT adds to its investment portfolio

With the commercial real estate markets remaining soft, a recent acquisition may bring hope for some real estate investors. A real estate investment trust, Parkway Properties Inc., based in Orlando, Florida, recently purchased a Class A office building in Tempe, Arizona, adding to its growing investment fund portfolio.

The Hayden Ferry II building was purchased February 13 for $86 million and now the REIT owns both buildings -- Hayden Ferry I and II. The seller of the property was not disclosed, but the property was purchased in 2008 for $92.5 million and was built in 2007 by SunCor.

Two entrepreneurs win grants to start their own businesses

When you hear the word entrepreneur you might think of a creative individual who is willing to take a risk or someone who has a groundbreaking idea. Well, for two students who graduated from the Southwest Florida MicroEnterprise Program, they can now view themselves as entrepreneurs for their creative business plans. Each student will receive $2,500 to start-up their businesses.

The MicroEnterprise Program is a specialized program designed to help any aspiring entrepreneur who may be unemployed or underemployed or disadvantaged from a financial standpoint. The grants are provided by Lee County Department of Human Services and those that graduate from the program can apply. The stipulation for the grant money is that the recipient must live in and have their business in Lee County.

Commercial real estate market expected to remain soft

While the housing market has been struggling nationwide, there are problems on the horizon in Florida with commercial properties trying to refinance, sell or recapitalize.

Lenders are now trying to deal with loans that were made during the real estate boom of 2007. Commercial real estate properties, like residential properties, have seen a fall in value and many lenders are finding themselves with a loan to ratio value of 100 percent -- hardly an ideal situation when trying to find an investor to buy or refinance the loan. Most lenders aren't interested in a highly leveraged loan, so a borrower could find an equity partner to add more capital to the deal, lowering the overall amount of debt on the property to make it more attractive to refinance.

Macy's and Martha Stewart lock horns in contract dispute

If Orlando residents want to get a product they saw in Martha Stewart Living, they head to Macy's, the store that exclusively sells certain lines of Martha Stewart's home, bath and cooking products. Or, wait - do they go to Macy's or to rival department store J.C. Penney?

Consumer confusion like that is a big part of the reason why Macy's has sued Martha Stewart's company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Essentially, it is a contract dispute. Macy's claims Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia had agreed to sell certain products only through Macy's and is not happy that it is now selling the same or similar products through J.C. Penney.

Financial giant wants to acquire Florida's BankAtlantic

Financial behemoth Branch Banking and Trust has announced it wants to go ahead with its purchase of Florida's BankAtlantic, even though there are several legal concerns in the way.

BankAtlantic, which is based in Fort Lauderdale, has $3.3 billion in deposits, $2.1 billion in loans and 78 branches. Unfortunately, it also has a parent company that is in trouble with the SEC over allegations that it misled investors with respect to loan risks.

Senor Frog's franchise opens in Orlando

Senor Frog's, the chain of Mexican-style bars-and-grills, is opening a new location on Orlando's International Drive. Although we do not know for sure, it is fair to say it took a bit of work to get all the details ironed out to bring this franchise location to Orlando.

Senor Frog's usually opens locations in international tourist destinations, like Cancun and Playa del Carmen. It has a few U.S. locations, including restaurants in Honolulu and Las Vegas. Its Orlando location is the first in Florida.
